Relaxation through meditation

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the act of inward contemplation and often involves specific attention towards something to draw a particular focus. This attention can be directed towards a feeling, a physical object, a visualisation, or simply a breath. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years and is commonly linked to Buddhist tradition.

In more recent times scientist have attempted to study the effects of regular meditation on the body and mind. Studies to-date have shown meditation has a wide number of physical and psychological benefits:

  • lowers the heart rate
  • helps lower blood pressure in people who are normal to moderately hypertensive
  • helps relieve certain forms of cardiovascular disease
  • aids in quicker recovery from stress
  • helps to sooth the turbulence and distress associated with ordinary life
  • is useful in the treatment of asthma
  • enhances sensory, perceptual and cognitive abilities
  • is associated with a more positive attitude to life, inner calmness, strength and fulfillment.

Meditation in Practice

Concentration meditation

This meditation involves focusing the attention on a single object (e.g. focus on breathings, an image, a candle, or a mantra) and is particularly beneficial for people who find it difficult to quiet internal "chatter".

Meditation in motion

This technique involves movement and is often associated with yoga. However, for this class it involves walking in slow motion, focusing on body parts and assisting in body relaxation.

Music meditation

This meditation involves listening to soothing music and may also incorporate guided visualisation to take staff on a journey towards relaxation happiness and peace.
